According to the Federal Network Agency, on September 17, 2026, the special rules of the EEG (Renewable Energy Sources Act) will limit module power to a maximum of 2.000 W and inverter power to a total of 800 VA per point of use. The plant must be registered in the market master data register within one month of commissioning. Zero feed-in does not exempt a grid-connected plant from this obligation.
Multiple plug-in solar devices are not fundamentally excluded: The decisive factor is their combined output at the same point of connection. For the special rules of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), free feed-in must also apply, meaning operation without feed-in tariffs. A storage system or an app setting of 800 VA does not, in itself, prove that all requirements are met.
What will apply in 2026 for 800 VA and 2.000 W module power?
The German Federal Network Agency This describes the simplified case of a plug-in solar device with a maximum installed module power of 2.000 W and a maximum inverter power of 800 VA. Both values must be within the limit simultaneously.
The 800 VA limit refers to the AC apparent power of the inverter, not the module power in watt-peak. According to the Federal Network Agency, the highest selectable power setting is what counts for the EEG classification. If the operator simply selects a lower setting, this does not change this power value.
| Question | Updated 17.09.2026 | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Module performance | maximum 2.000 W | This does not constitute a simplified case for plug-in solar devices. |
| Inverters for Home | maximum 800 VA | Check AC limit separately |
| Registration | MaStR within one month | even with zero feed-in |
| Amendment to the EEG | Cabinet draft dated 29 July 2026 | not to anticipate as applicable law |
Register your balcony power plant: MaStR instead of duplicate reporting
If the system meets all the requirements of a plug-in solar device, then according to Overview of balcony power plants by the Federal Network Agency No additional notification to the network operator is required. Registration in the market master data register remains mandatory.
The special rules of the EEG and the technical connection process must be examined separately. VDE FNN Section 4.4 of VDE-AR-N 4105:2026-03 describes a simplified process for small generation plants, storage systems, and combined DC-coupled units up to a total of 800 VA. This does not replace the EEG (Renewable Energy Sources Act) inspection or the installation requirements. If your system configuration differs, you must clarify the connection with the grid operator and a qualified electrician.
For a solar system with battery storage, this requires Market master data register Two units. Solar and storage can be registered together or at different times. Registration does not confirm a specific firmware version or technical release.
Related product selection: The Anker The SOLIX Solarbank 3 E2700 Pro is currently available in the Mini-Power catalog. Whether a specific combination as a plug-in solar device remains within the limits of 2.000 W module power and 800 VA inverter power is not determined by the product data sheet, but by the complete system configuration.
Zero feed-in from balcony power plants: technically zero is not legally invisible.
In the event of zero feed-in, an energy management system limits the output to the public grid. This requires a correctly installed meter, the correct measuring direction, a functioning data connection, and appropriate control. Short-term deviations from the standard control cannot be completely ruled out for technical reasons.
According to the Federal Network Agency, even systems that do not feed into the grid must generally be registered in the Market Master Data Register if they are directly or indirectly connected to the public electricity grid. Zero feed-in therefore does not exempt registration. Outside of the special regulations for plug-in solar devices, grid connection and required information must be clarified with the responsible grid operator; the specific requirements depend on the system configuration and connection conditions.
Comparing measured values correctly: Note the measuring point and check whether the reading describes a single phase or the sum across all phases. Also record the signs for grid consumption and feed-in, as well as the time period. Selecting a Smart Meters This test does not replace the actual test. Only compare values with the same meaning; instantaneous power in W is not the same as energy in kWh.
Which devices are actually being regulated? Create two lists: one with the measured devices and one with the controllable inverters or storage systems. Check the manufacturer's documentation for the specific models and the approved configuration. A device whose power output appears in an app does not automatically prove it is controllable. Work on the meter cabinet should only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
What do 24 hours reveal? A daily log only describes the observed period and the operating conditions that occurred during that time. It does not prove that zero feed-in was maintained continuously, for example, under different loads, different charge levels, or interrupted data connections. Therefore, also document the settings, timestamps, and any identifiable gaps in the data. This observation does not replace manufacturer approval or testing. Registration requirement in the market master data register.
Related measurement solution: The product “Anker Solix The "Smart Meter 3-phase 120 A for Solarbank 2&3" is currently available in the Mini-Power catalog. A smart meter can provide measurement data for a control system. However, it alone does not prove that zero feed-in is being maintained at all times, nor does it exempt you from the registration requirement.
Do not confuse zero feed-in, island operation, and emergency power.
A grid-connected system with zero feed-in remains connected to the public grid. Its protection and disconnection rules continue to apply. An off-grid system, on the other hand, is electrically isolated. A separate backup outlet supplies only the designated loads. Each of these operating modes requires its own protection concept.
If the house's electrical system needs to remain powered during a power outage, a properly authorized transfer switch and appropriate planning are required. No voltage should be allowed to enter de-energized sections of the network via a standard electrical connection. This work should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
The DKE states in its Standard interpretation To be clear: DIN VDE V 0126-95 addresses plug-in solar devices without storage. Additional requirements must be met for combination with an electrical storage system; the conformity of the device without storage cannot be transferred to the expanded system. This does not imply approval for every storage combination, nor a general sales ban. A qualified electrician must assess the connection and protection of the existing wiring for the specific installation.
What the draft law of July 29, 2026 changes – and what it doesn't.
On September 24, 2026, the Bundestag held its first reading of the amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). The draft then went to the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy. Parliament page The document dated October 2nd documents this procedural status. A draft bill is not yet a legally binding law.
Announced simplifications should not be anticipated during purchase and installation. The decisive factors are the regulations in effect on the day of registration, the technical connection requirements, and the specific network connection.
The Federal Network Agency has MiSpeL The regulation was adopted on October 1, 2026. It includes a transition period until the end of September 2027 for implementation by network and metering point operators. During this period, application is possible with their consent. For the blanket option, the European Commission's approval of the legal basis under state aid rules must also be awaited. Therefore, MiSpeL is not a blanket authorization for every plug-in storage device.
Test sequence for operators
-
Define performance limits.
Record module power and highest selectable AC apparent power separately. Record all plug-in solar devices connected to the same power outlet, as well as any existing storage systems.
-
Assign plant type.
Clearly distinguish between plug-in solar devices, regular grid-connected systems, zero feed-in systems, and island operation.
-
Complete the registration on time.
Register your solar power system within one month of commissioning. A separate unit is required for battery storage. Changes to registered data must also be entered within one month.
-
Have any discrepancies professionally reviewed.
If the limits are exceeded or the combination is unclear, have the connection path checked. Have the type plates, current manufacturer's documentation, the wiring diagram, and the firmware version ready.
Frequently asked questions
Does a balcony power plant with 800 VA need to be registered?
Yes. A suitable plug-in solar device must be registered in the market master data register within one month. The additional notification to the grid operator is not required if the conditions are met.

Yes. According to the Federal Network Agency, the registration requirement also applies to generation plants without grid feed-in.
Does the EEG and grid connection package from July 2026 already apply?
A draft law is not yet a valid law.
